F.A.Q

What are School Community Councils?

Provincial legislation requires every school in Saskatchewan to have a school community council (SCC).

A SCC consists of 5-9 elected parents and community members as well as 1-2 students, the principal and one designated teacher.  Others may be designated if the community feels it is appropriate.

The main role of the SCC is to support student learning.  Working with the school staff, the SCC help identify priorities for student learning based on effective practices such as caring and respectful schools and meeting the needs of all learners.

The SCC also provide communities with a voice in local education as well as provide parent and community members with opportunities to initiate, support and build programs that enhance learning and student well being.  SCCs work with schools to ensure success for all!

What are the benefits of School Community Councils?

SCCs increase parent and community involvement in schools.  Educational studies demonstrate that this involvement benefits students, parents and the community.

Student benefits include improved marks and graduation rate, increased involvement in classroom activities and a more positive attitude, and higher attendance and greater enrollment in post secondary education.

Parent benefits include enhanced communication between parents, administrators and teachers, more opportunity for learning activities in the home and better understanding of how schools operate.

Community benefits include increased cost effectiveness due to the pooling of time, money and effort and strengthened community pride through involvement in the school’s achievements.

What are the responsibilities of School Community Councils?

1

Attend monthly meetings and other meetings as needed

2

Support parent and community involvement in schools

Advise the School Division Board of Education and the school on issues related to local education.

Work in cooperation with the school to develop a school learning improvement plan that will be recommended to the school division board.

5

Support local school initiatives

6

Develop initiatives that help parents support their children’s learning

7

Approve fees and fundraising in the school

How to get involved?

Members of SCCs are individuals who possess a strong understanding of their community and care deeply for the education and welfare of young people.

The SCC is designed to bring unique perspectives into one council.  These various perspectives from staff, students, parents and even community members who do not have children are beneficial to the success of the school.

Attendance at an annual general meeting is a great opportunity for parents and community members to learn more about SCCs and get involved.  These meetings are held in the spring each year and are advertised in numerous ways to encourage everyone to attend.  All meetings, including general monthly meetings are open to the public.

Parents and Community Members at Large are elected to a 2 year term.  All newly-elected members’ terms are staggered terms to assure continuity from year to year.  If you are interested in running for a position on the SCC or if you have any questions, please contact the principal.  Information on the SCC’s constitution and election procedures can be made available.
